Paris, TN – People struggle with hunger in every county in Tennessee and Henry County is no exception. One in seven people in Tennessee struggle with hunger, and one in five children go to bed hungry every night. This year, the Christmas Committee at Henry County Medical Center decided to do an organizational wide canned food drive for the Food Bank in Henry County as our way to give back to the community we serve.
This year, HCMC collected 1,076 items that were donated to the Henry County Food Bank this week. Eleven different departments were represented in collective giving, with Administration winning the Food Drive Department Challenge, collecting an average of 36.5 items per partner in that department.
“We were very excited to be able to do a food drive as our community project this year,” said Sean Taylor, Christmas Committee Chair and Director of Social Services at HCHC. “We love having the opportunity to give back to our community and this is the perfect way to do it. We are so thankful to our partners for their generous donations and the Food Bank staff was so overwhelmed and appreciative of our donations.”
The Henry County Food Bank is always asking for donations with increasing needs in our community. If you are looking for a way to give back this holiday season, consider giving to the food bank. Items they collect include the following:
- Canned and dry beans
- Peanut butter or other nut butters
- Shelf stable milk and milk substitutes
- Canned vegetables with no or low-sodium
- Low-sodium soups/pasta sauce
- Chicken, beef, and vegetable broths & stocks
- Brown rices, pasta or quinoa
- Seeds and nuts, unsalted
- Canned fruit in juice
- Canned stews or tomatoes
- Olive or canola oil
- Canned tuna in water
- Non-perishable staples for a Christmas Meal
