Paris, TN – Over the last decade, robotic surgery has been increasingly utilized at large medical centers to provide a more minimally invasive approach to a variety of surgeries. Henry County Medical Center is among those hospitals offering robotic surgery for OB/GYN, urology, and general surgery. On Monday, July 8, Jason Harper, MD, General Surgeon with Paris Surgical Specialists completed his 100th robotic surgery case utilizing the da Vinci Robotic System.
Betty Larson, of Big Sandy, TN came in that Monday morning for Dr. Harper to perform a colectomy using the da Vinci robot. Surgeons using da Vinci technology may be able to remove part of or your entire colon through a few small incisions.
During robotic surgery, Dr. Harper sits at a console next to the patient and operates using tiny, wristed instruments. The da Vinci system translates every hand movement Dr. Harper makes in real time with precision and accuracy meaning less invasive surgical outcomes for patients who have surgery in this manner.
“I have seen a positive effect since beginning to utilize robotic assisted surgery in colon and rectal surgery, antireflux surgery and hernia repair,” said Dr. Harper. “I am proud to be a part of robotics at HCMC and I look forward to employing robotic technology and techniques to improve patient outcomes moving toward the future.”
Dr. Harper sees patients at Paris Surgical Specialists and practices surgery at Henry County Medical Center. He earned his Medical Doctorate degree from the University of Tennessee in Memphis and completed a five year Residency in General Surgery. In addition, he completed a one year fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University of Tennessee with special training in advanced laparoscopic surgery techniques. Dr. Harper is a member of the American College of Surgeons and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.
