Everyone sleeps, but not everyone sleeps well. Each night more than 70 million Americans who suffer from a sleep disorder struggle to get a good night of sleep. (American Academy of Sleep Medicine). At the Sleep Disorder Center, our mission is to help you get a good night’s sleep, helping improve your quality of life as well as educating you in sleep disorders related to breathing and the impact the disorders have on your life.
The goal of HCMC Sleep Disorders Center is to help our patients understand sleep problems, their impact and what can be done about them in a comfortable testing environment. We specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of over 84 classified sleep disorders in adults and adolescents.
Common disorders include:
- Insomnia – an inability to fall or stay asleep that can result in functional impairment throughout the day.
- Narcolepsy – excessive daytime sleepiness combined with sudden muscle weakness; episodes of narcolepsy are sometimes called “sleep attacks” and may occur in unusual circumstances.
- Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) – an unpleasant “creeping” sensation associated with aches and pains throughout the legs that can make it difficult to fall asleep.
- Sleep Apnea – interrupted sleep caused by periodic gasping or “snorting” noises or momentarily suspension of breathing.
Our Center utilizes a Physician that is Board Certified in Sleep Medicine. Our specialists, including three Registered Polysomnographic Technologists, are available five days a week with normal testing time from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. We have four beds available with state-of-the-art equipment testing patients for such disorders as Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Central Sleep Apnea, and providing Positive Airway Pressure Titration studies for treatment of abnormalities detected in the initial Polysomnography test.

Sleep Hygiene
Poor sleep habits (referred to as hygiene) are among the most common problems encountered in our society. We stay up too late and get up too early. We interrupt our sleep with drugs, chemicals and work, and we overstimulate ourselves with late-night activities such as television. Download our Sleep Hygiene Essential for Health.
